Raising Awareness on Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction: A Collective Perspective

Overdose Awareness Day (August 31, 2024) is a crucial topic, especially given its impact on pressing issues like homelessness and the drug trade in the United States. The CDC recently estimated that over 107,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in 2023 alone, illustrating the importance of raising awareness on this epidemic. Having access to life-saving tools like Narcan and knowing how to use them can make a significant difference.

Meet the Guests: Melissa and Nikki

Melissa is a Certified Recovery Peer Support Specialist and the Co-Founder of Underground Recovery JAX, a harm reduction organization based in Jacksonville, Florida. Nikki is also a Peer Support Specialist and the Director of Outreach at Rebel Recovery JAX, a recovery community organization. Together, they have worked tirelessly to help people struggling with substance use issues to put the pieces of their lives back together.

The Journey of Underground Recovery JAX

Melissa and Nikki met in 2019 when Melissa moved from Las Vegas to Jacksonville. Initially working out of the trunk of their car, they provided Narcan and other harm reduction supplies to those in need. Over time, their efforts blossomed into Underground Recovery JAX, a non-profit organization that has served over 200 participants and significantly impacted Duval County.

The Roots of Addiction and Overdose

Addiction often stems from trauma and a lack of coping mechanisms. Many people turn to drugs and alcohol as a default coping strategy. The healthcare system plays a significant role in either assisting recovery or adding barriers, which can lead to tragic outcomes.

The Role of Harm Reduction

Harm reduction aims to keep people safe, even if they are not ready to achieve complete sobriety. This approach includes providing clean needles, teaching safe usage practices, and ensuring people have access to Naloxone and fentanyl test strips. Harm reduction saves lives by reducing the immediate risks associated with drug use.

Understanding the Role of Naloxone

Naloxone is the opioid overdose reversal medication, available as a nasal spray (brands Narcan) and in other forms. It works by knocking the opioid off its receptor in the brain, effectively reversing the overdose. The importance of having Naloxone readily available cannot be overstated, as it can save lives.

Overdose Awareness Day Activities

Overdose Awareness Day, first established in 2001 in Australia, is a day to commemorate loved ones lost to overdose and support affected families. Activities include candlelight vigils, healing circles, and personal stories of overcoming addiction. These events aim to unite communities and raise awareness about the importance of overdose prevention.

Final Thoughts and Call to Action

Education and awareness are crucial in preventing overdoses. Harm reduction programs, like those offered by Underground Recovery JAX and Rebel Recovery JAX, provide essential services to those in need. These organizations are committed to meeting people where they are and helping them find a pathway to recovery.

For more information or to get involved, you can contact Underground Recovery JAX on Instagram @undergroundrecoveryjax or call 904-640-4962. Rebel Recovery JAX can be reached at 904-673-4021, and they're also active on Facebook and Instagram. Remember, there is no wrong way to reach out for help.
